Box Office: Anthony Hopkins horror 'The Rite' tops a quiet Friday

anthony-hopkins-the-rite.jpgOn an overall soft day at the U.S. Box Office, Anthony Hopkins' latest scarefest "The Rite" pulled in $5.3 million. While it did nab the top spot, distributors had hoped for a bigger turnout in largely Catholic markets like Boston and Philadelphia that may have been impacted by the recent snowstorms on the east coast.

"No Strings Attached" came in second for the night and could still potentially win the weekend with $4.4 million, giving it a $30.4 million cumulative gross so far. At number three, the debut of Jason Statham's "The Mechanic" grossed $3.6.

In at No. 4 "The Green Hornet" took in $2.9 million for a $70.2 million cumulative gross. Oscar-bait "The King's Speech" opened to a wider audience on Friday, increasing its theater count to 2,557 and bringing in $2.8 million, which gives it a total of $63.9 million.

Despite the slow night, Oscar nominated films that have been in theaters for a while did enjoy a slight bump as movie-goers look forward to the Awards Ceremony.
