Box office: 'Evil Dead' has a scary good opening weekend

evil-dead-box-office-april-7.jpgThe "Evil Dead" remake led a solid weekend at the box office, pulling in an estimated $26 million over its first three-plus days.

The horror movie starring Jane Levy and Lou Taylor Pucci stayed on top after a strong opening Friday (and Thursday night), coming in ahead of pre-weekend forecasts and making back its reported $17 million budget in its first weekend.

There was a tie for second place between "The Croods" and "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," both of which made an estimated $21.1 million over the weekend. The 3D rerelease of "Jurassic Park" made a little more than $18 million -- a million dollars more than "Titanic 3D" did on the same weekend last year.

Robert Redford's "The Company You Keep" ($146,058 on five screens) and Danny Boyle's "Trance" ($136,100 on four screens) both did well in limited release, while the Bradley Cooper-Ryan Gosling thriller "The Place Beyond the Pines" expanded from four to 30 theaters and took in a little under $700,000.
