Box office: 'Expendables' get the most 'Love' over the weekend

the-expendables2-320.jpgIf ever there was a weekend for couples to go their separate ways at the multiplex, this was it. The guys apparently just brought more of their single dude friends with them.

"The Expendables," Sylvester Stallone's testosterone-spiked action movie, ruled the box office over the weekend, beating the Julia Roberts romance/personal-discovery film "Eat Pray Love."

Sly and his pals opened strong on Friday and continued that trend through the weekend, taking in just over $35 million, according to studio estimates.

"Eat Pray Love," based on the best-selling book and directed by Ryan Murphy ("Glee") couldn't match "The Expendables'" firepower. The movie had a pretty respectable showing at the box office nonetheless, earning $23.7 million. The weekend's other new release, "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," was a little farther back, finishing fifth with an estimated $10.5 million.

Last weekend's top two movies, "The Other Guys" and "Inception," finished third and fourth. "The Other Guys" made an additional $18 million. "Inception" pulled in about $11.4 million to push its five-week total to just under $250 million.
