Box office: 'Monsters University' doesn't feel 'The Heat' - or 'White House Down'

This weekend, the newest movies to be released aren't vying for first place in the box office, but rather second. The first place slot still goes to "Monsters University," which is staying strong in its second week of release.

Coming in close behind is the Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy buddy comedy "The Heat," which trailed behind on Friday by little more than $500,000. Then there's Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx's "White House Down," which earned an approximate $9 million on its first day of release. That's a disappointing start for the action film, which raked in less than the similarly-themed "Olympus Has Fallen."

Rounding out the top five are genre flicks "World War Z," which came in close behind "White House Down" on its second weekend, and the comic book epic "Man of Steel." Still clinging to life is "Iron Man 3," which claimed the 10th spot on Friday's box office numbers.

Here's Friday's Top 10 box office numbers.

1. "Monsters University," $14.3 million
2. "The Heat," 13.6 million
3. "White House Down," $9 million
4. "World War Z," $8.9 million
5. "Man of Steel," $6.0 million
6. "This Is The End," $2.6 million
7. "Now You See Me," $1.7 million
8. "Fast & Furious 6," 713,000
9. "Star Trek Into Darkness," $537,000
10. "Iron Man 3," $420,000
