Box Office: 'Muppets' opens solid, but 'Breaking Dawn' stays on top

muppets-trailler-oct-14.jpg "The Muppets" had a strong first weekend box office earning, taking in a solid $42 million. But it wasn't enough to wrest the box office crown from "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1," which was tops at the box office for the second weekend in a row, earning $62 million.

"Breaking Dawn" is now approaching a total of $225 million domestically and $400 million total worldwide.

More family fare rounds out the box office Top 5. "Happy Feet 2" earned $18.5 million over the five-day holiday weekend, good for third place. It was followed by "Arthur Christmas" at no. 4 with $17 million and "Hugo" at $15.3 million.

The overall box office was down 12% compared to Thanksgiving weekend last year, though last year's Turkey Day weekend did have "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1."

We'll have the full Top 10 as soon as the numbers are available.
