Box Office: 'The Avengers' tops $700 million worldwide

avengers-midnight-box-office.jpgClearly the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, as "Marvel's The Avengers" has been smashing box office records since it opened worldwide last week. The worldwide box office earnings have now reached $702.2 million as of the Monday, May 8 take.

The U.S. total has topped $225 million, while the international gross of the Joss Whedon superheroes hit has topped $475 million. "Avengers" has now surpassed the total earnings of its predecessor movies "Iron Man" ($318 M), "Iron Man 2" ($312 M), "Thor" ($181 M), "Captain America: The First Avenger" ($176 M) and "The Incredible Hulk" ($135 M). Only $420 million more to go to surpass the other movies' total.

The "Avengers" total so far has it at No. 47 on the list of highest grossing movies of all time (not adjusted for inflation). If you take ticket price inflation into account, "Avengers" still has a ways to go - just the No. 10 spot on that list grossed nearly $1.75 billion and belongs to "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" (no kidding, we were surprised too).

Have you seen "The Avengers" yet? Did you love it?
