Box office: 'The Lorax' fends off 'John Carter' for No. 1

john-carter-trailer.jpg"John Carter" might've had a $200 million budget, but after Friday's (March 9) box office receipts have been tallied, it appears that Dr. Seuss will reign supreme once again.

"The Lorax" is on track to become the No. 1 movie in America for the second week in a row, raking in $9.8 million on Friday, according to Deadline. "John Carter" followed closely behind with $9.6 million, enough to earn a second-place spot but a disappointment considering its gigantic budget. Teen party pic "Project X" came in third with $3.9 million on Friday.

"Silent House," which also opened this weekend, managed to crack the top 5, earning $2.6 million on Friday to come in fourth, while "Act of Valor" brought in $2.0 million. Eddie Murphy's "A Thousand Words" was No. 6 with $1.9 million, followed by the thriller "Safe House" with $1.3 million, the Channing Tatum/Rachel McAdams romance "The Vow" with $1.2 million and romantic thriller (rom-thri?) "This Means War" with $1.2 million. "Journey 2" rounded out Friday's Top 10 with $850,000.
