'BrandX with Russell Brand' canceled at FX, Russell Brand starring in pilot

FX Networks CEO John Landgraf told reporters Thursday (June 6) that "I don't think we're going to bring 'BrandX' back." The late-night show finished its second season on May 2.

FX's other late-night show, "Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell," will migrate to FXX when it launches in September and convert to a nightly show.

As for Brand, meanwhile, "I think we're going to do another show with Russell that's going to be a scripted, live-action comedy," Landgraf says. "So the relationship is going to continue.

"But ultimately we looked at 'BrandX' and 'Totally Biased' and we looked at the audience results and we felt two things: One, Kamau and [executive producer Chris Rock] were more ready to convert to a daily show in terms of their production process. ... And second of all, we saw more potential and upside in ['Totally Biased']."

The show starring Brand will be loosely based on his own life, a la "Curb Your Enthusiasm." It's in the very early stages of development, though, and doesn't have a writer attached yet.
