Warning: The following story contains major spoilers for the next book in the "Bridget Jones" series.

A preview of the next book in the series, "Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy," was published in the U.K.'s Sunday Times magazine, revealing a very significant character death. The novel picks up over a decade after Mark Darcy proposed to the writer, in "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason."

Jones now has two children from Darcy, who died five years before the book is set. Author Helen Fielding doesn't shed light on how exactly Darcy, who is portrayed by Colin Firth in the film series, died.

Now, Bridget is dating a younger guy she met through online dating and is immersing herself in the social media revolution. Quite a change from the Bridget fans might remember.

The online response to the death has been overwhelmingly sad, with many wondering why Fielding decided to go the route she's chosen. Without the full novel to digest though, there's no telling what the real story behind Darcy's death is.

"Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy" foes on sale October 10.
