Cannes bidder pays $1.5 million for Leonardo DiCaprio space trip
The prize was up for auction at the amfAR charity event at Cannes on Thursday (May 23). According to AceShowbiz, the bidding for the ticket started at one million Euros (about $1.3 million) before going to Russian Vasily Klyukin's winning price. In addition to the seat next to Leo, another pair of seats on the space trip were auctioned off for $2.3 million.
DiCaprio, his guest and a host of famous names like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Ashton Kutcher will get their chance to visit outer space thanks to Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic space program. If all goes according to plan, Branson will launch the first tourist flight to space out of New Mexico by the end of 2013. The flight with DiCaprio is currently scheduled for early 2014.
Unfortunately, the prize did not guarantee holding Leo's hand if things got scary. That would be worth at least a million more dollars.
