CBS has ordered "Under the Dome," a new series from Steven Spielberg and Stephen King, for the summer of 2013. This straight-to-series order for 13 episodes is based on the 2009 King novel of the same name.

"Under the Dome" tells the story of a small New England town faced with a bizarre and potentially disastrous fate: An enormous, transparent dome appears out of nowhere, sealing off the town from the rest of the world. Those inside the dome must learn to survive the suddenly post-apocalyptic conditions while trying to figure out the nature, origins and possible future of the barrier surrounding them.

"This is a great novel coming to the television screen with outstanding auspices and in-season production values to create a summer programming event," CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler said in a statement. "We're excited to transport audiences 'Under the Dome' and into the extraordinary world that Stephen King has imagined."

The series -- originally developed as a series for Showtime before moving to CBS -- will be produced by CBS Television Studios and by Spielberg's Amblin Television. Neal Baer, Stephen King, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Stacey Snider and Brian K. Vaughan will serve as executive producers, and the pilot will be written by Vaughan and directed by Niels Arden Opley.

After years of little besides procedurals and sitcoms, it looks like CBS will finally bring in a little bit of the "weird" this summer.
