'Chuck' lets it all hang out for Zachary Levi's third directorial effort

chuck-vs-hack-off1.jpg Zachary Levi directed Friday's (Dec. 9) episode of "Chuck," marking his third time behind the camera on the series. And for at least part of the episode, he did both his directing and acting jobs without any pants on.

The episode, "Chuck vs. the Hack-Off," has Chuck (Levi) and Sarah ( Yvonne Strahovski) infiltrating a cult in search of the creator of a nasty computer virus (guest star Eric Lange of "Lost"). Upon arrival, they discover that the commune's members aren't that into wearing clothes -- and when they do, their taste runs to very short tunics.

"It's very hippie-dippy on the set of 'Chuck' -- everyone's free-flowing," Strahovski said with a smile as Zap2it observed filming of the episode in September. "Zac's little dress is particularly short. We hope he's wearing underwear." (He was.)

The episode will also bring Gertrude Verbanski ( Carrie-Anne Moss) back into the picture. She's after the same thing Chuck and Sarah are, but her approach is a little different. Whereas Chuck and Sarah try to blend in, "I'm in camouflage," Moss says. "I'm not getting naked."

"[Sarah] and I are having to come together to help one another," Moss says, "yet there's a total competitive energy there between our characters. ... That's been really fun."

Moss also notes that while Gertrude and Sarah are both excellent spies, their personalities diverge from there.

"As I've seen [Sarah] in the other episodes, she's strong and capable and focused, but she also notices all those little innuendos of, 'How are you feeling?'" Moss says. "She has moments where she actually asks my character how she feels, and my character is like, Shut up. Don't talk to me about feelings. ... One of the things I love that they do on this show, and I've had the opportunity to do it now -- although it's not easy -- is to fight and have a total conversation about life."

Moss' return to "Chuck" could also mean some more sparks between her character and John Casey ( Adam Baldwin) -- provided he can find a way out of jail. The last episode ended with Casey hauled off in handcuffs after he took out a contract killer and her team. As you can see in the clips below, he's not happy with his current situation, but he's willing to ride it out -- even if it means forced interaction with Lester ( Vik Sahay), who was also arrested last time out.

"Chuck" airs at 8 p.m. ET Friday on NBC. Take a look at Casey and Lester in lockup:
