CW developing sci-fi Mars drama 'Red' from 'Mentalist' executive producers: Could this be the next 'Firefly?'
One of TV's biggest mistakes was canceling Joss Whedon's brilliant series, "Firefly," after just one season.
The sci-fi space-western has a die-hard, loyal fan base that continues to grow years after its unfortunate cancelation. Sure, the series got a neat ending with the feature film, "Serenity," and continues on in comic book form, but you'll be hard-pressed to find someone who isn't upset at how short-lived the series was.
The CW might be trying to cash in on this idea, as its latest project suggests. The network is developing "Red," a Western/sci-fi drama from "The Mentalist" executive producers Bruno Heller and Tom Szentgyorgyi, Deadline reports.
"Red" is described as a neo-Western drama about the first human settlement on Mars and life on this new frontier, centering on the relationships between the town's female sheriff, a doctor and a criminal.
Could "Red" be the next "Firefly?" Probably not, as no one can hold to candle to Whedon's particular brand of sarcasm and humor balancing out drama and action, but the new series certainly sounds intriguing. What do you think of The CW's latest project? Let us know in the comments below.
