'Dancing with the Stars' finale: Amber, Bill, Corbin and Jack dance

dancing-with-the-stars-finale-finalists-part-1-abc.jpgThe "Dancing with the Stars" Season 17 finale is underway, and you can follow along with all of the action in this live blog. From dances to results and the elimination, all of it is here.

Before there is any dancing, the show brings back last season's winner, Kellie Pickler, to sing. It's all very country. The four finalist couples enter after that. They are:

  • Jack Osbourne and Cheryl Burke
  • Amber Riley and Derek Hough
  • Bill Engvall and Emma Slater
  • Corbin Bleu and Karina Smirnoff

Each couple will have multiple performances in this first night. There's a judges' choice dance that's pretty much the normal deal. Then there's a samba relay, set to the music of TLC -- a band that's in the house.

8:09 - First dance of the night is Bill and Emma. They've got a Viennese waltz danced to Billy Joel music. Scores: 8+8+8 = 24

8:12 - It's Bruno Tonioli's birthday! They didn't say which one.

8:21
- Corbin and Karina had the quickstep. The judges didn't see too much improvement and awarded: 9+9+9 = 27

8:32
- Jack and Cheryl take on the jive again. Possibly due to nerves, this isn't the best. Scores: 8+8+8 = 24

8:43 - Amber and Derek got the Charleston. The dance was essentially perfect, and the judges agreed: 10+10+10 = 30

That looks to be it for the judges' choice round.

8:53 - Samba relay! Essentially, this means that the finalist couples samba one after the other to the sounds of "No Scrubs" performed live right behind them. Jack and Cheryl were followed by Amber and Derek, then Bill and Emma. Corbin and Karina got the final slot in the relay.

9:01 - It takes awhile to do all those dances. When it's over, the rankings of the "whamba" are as follows:

4th - Bill and Emma (2 points)
3rd - Jack and Cheryl (3 points)
2nd - Amber and Derek (4 points)
1st - Corbin and Karina (5 points)

Freestyle dances are up next. Should be interesting ...

9:09 - What happens when Bill and Emma do a "Raiders of the Lost Ark"-themed freestyle dance? Well, for one thing, Bill takes off his shirt to show off his one-pack.

Scores: 8+9+8 = 25 (that 9 is from Len -- he was seriously amused)

9:17 - Brooke Burke-Charvet managed to sound serious while announcing that Ylvis will be there to sing "The Fox" tomorrow. Wow.

9:20 - After training with Michael Jackson's choreographer, Corbin and Karina went with "Smooth Criminal" using Cirque du Soleil performers and "DWTS" pros. There's moonwalking and acrobatics and rather impressive King of Pop impressions. Wow.

Scores: 10+10+10 = 30

9:31 - Jack and Cheryl have the next freestyle. They go a little more conservative with a top-hat-and-tails dance. It suits them (and the the large number of instrument-holding backup dancers). The judges love it.

Scores: 10+10+10 = 30

9:43 - Apparently, Amber was on a stepping team in high school for awhile. So that's the basis of this freestyle. It's essentially Amber dancing with a whole bunch of boys. This works.

Scores: 10+10+10 = 30

Now, someone has to be eliminated. All of the scores added up are:

Amber and Derek: 30+4+30 = 64
Corbin and Karina: 27+5+30 = 62
Jack and Cheryl: 24+3+30 = 57
Bill and Emma: 24+2+25 = 51

When combined with the votes, these scores will determine which three dancers will make it to the second night of the finale. They'll have to do something called a "24-hour fusion dance" at that point. Whatever that may be.

Oh. So everyone has to pick fusion dances for everyone else. Bill and Emma pick quickstep-samba for Amber and Derek. Jack and Cheryl pick cha-cha-foxtrot for Corbin and Karina. Corbin and Karina pick paso doble-salsa for Jack and Cheryl. That leaves Bill and Emma with jive-quickstep.

Assuming, of course, the couples aren't eliminated.

Results!

Amber and Derek are safe and in the finale!

Corbin and Karina are safe and in the finale!

Jack and Cheryl are safe and in the finale!

Which means ...

Bill and Emma have been eliminated from "Dancing with the Stars."
