Dario Franchitti, a three-time Indy 500 winner, was injured Sunday in a crash at the Houston Grand Prix. Franchitti was hospitalized with two fractured vertebra, a broken ankle and a concussion after his car went airborne into a fence during the race's final lap.

The Associated Press reports than 13 fans were injured by debris from the accident, with two of them being transported to the hospital for treatment. The crash occurred after Franchitti came into contact with Takuma Sato's car.

Race officials immediately called for a freeze on the field, essentially stopping anyone from changing their standings. The race was won by Will Powers, who broke his own back in March during a Las Vegas race. Franchitti was expected to be held overnight for his injuries.
