Demi Lovato takes Disney Channel to task for eating-disorder joke

demi-lovato-dec-2011-gi.jpg Demi Lovato is no longer a Disney Channel star, but she's still affecting its programming.

Lovato, who received treatment for bulimia last year, took her former TV home to task on Friday after watching an episode of Disney's series "Shake It Up." The episode, "Party It Up," featured a female character delivering the line, "I could just eat you up -- well, if I ate."

"I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress[es] from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke about that very disease. #nice," Lovato wrote on Twitter.

She also re-tweeted a note from one of her 5 million-plus followers about a similar joke on "So Random" -- the show that spun off from Lovato's former series, "Sonny With a Chance."

"And is it just me or are the actress[es] getting THINNER AND THINNER.... I miss the days of RAVEN, and LIZZIE MCGUIRE," she added.

The good news, though? Disney Channel listened. Soon after Lovato's tweets, the channel's PR team replied that Disney was pulling both episodes and "re-evaluating them," adding that "It's NEVER our intention to make light of eating disorders!"

Lovato also later clarified her "thinner and thinner" comment: "Just clearing things up, I have nothing against any specific actress/actor or TV show. Nor do I think there's anything wrong with girls who aren't curvy, I just was stating a fact that there needs to be more variety on television so young girls growing up don't feel pressured to look one specific way. Tall, thin, curvy, short, whatever you are, you are beautiful. :)"

Good on Lovato for bringing the issue to light, and good on Disney Channel for listening and pulling the episodes out of rotation.
