The 50th anniversary "Doctor Who" special did big ratings in the United Kingdom, but it wasn't enough to win the battle for the night. Instead, that victory went to "Strictly Come Dancing," the UK equivalent of "Dancing with the Stars."
According to the Guardian, "The Day of the Doctor" averages 10.2 million viewers, peaking at 10.61 million. Meanwhile, "Strictly Come Dancing" averaged 10.6 million viewers, with an impressive 11.7 million viewer peak.
The special "Doctor Who" episode was the fight most-watched in the series since it was relaunched in 2005. It's important to note that the episode was also screened in theaters around the world, with nearly half a million tickets being sold in the UK. It was also simulcast globally, in 94 different countries. US ratings haven't been released.
