Donald Trump sues Bill Maher over orangutan/birth certificate comment
Of course, there is a little more to it than that. In January, Maher was a guest on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." During the show, the topic of conversation got around to Trump's ceaseless insistence that President Obama had not produced a valid birth certificate. Maher joked that he would donate $5 million to charity if Trump could produce a birth certificate of his own, this one proving himself not to be the "spawn of his mother having sex with an orangutan."
Trump quickly did produce a birth certificate. And there was no mention of an orangutan anywhere on the document. Thus, the "Apprentice" host felt that he had satisfied his end of the deal.
The problem is that Maher has not. Now, Trump is ready to sue.
"He promised me $5 million for charity if I provided certain information," Trump explained during a visit to "Fox & Friends" on Monday (Feb. 4). "Well, I provided the information, he didn't pay. So today, I sue Bill Maher for $5 million for charity."
Alas for Trump, this particular **publicity stunt lawsuit is most likely doomed to failure. Maher's comments -- made by a comedian on a comedy show and undeniably hyperbolic -- are hardly legally binding. Even if Trump doesn't like what Bill Maher said, this particular case may never see its day in court.
