Election 2012: Ian Somerhalder and Cher among celebs who get out the vote by Twitter

Social media gives celebrities a format to communicate directly with their fans, and during the 2012 election season, many have taken advantage of Twitter as a place to air their political views. It seems plenty of stars are concerned that Americans to do their civic duty.

Rob Lowe tweets, "Thanks to all volunteers on both sides for your passion for our great country. Now, we all must do our part. VOTE!!" Willie Nelson tweeted a similar sentiment, saying, "Vote! It's your most important job today.

Some celebrities chose to push for one candidate or another.

Cher tweets, "My heart is praying for PRESIDENT OBAMA ! If you haven't voted and you can VOTE XXXME," while "Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder writes, "Good night beautiful world- see you at the polls!Good luck Mr.President I look forward to having breakfast with you again! VOTE VOTE VOTE!

Stacey Dash -- who famously supports Mitt Romney -- wrote, "What a wonderful present it will be to have you Inaugurated as The President Of The USA on my birthday 1/20/2013! God Speed! @MittRomney"

Kourtney Kardashian was less concerned with whom you support, tweeting, "Everyone get out and VOTE for whoever you are feelin'!!!"
