Ex-President George H.W. Bush is on the mend, but his doctors are playing it safe with his health. The fever that kept him in the hospital over Christmas has broken at least, but he isn't out of the woods just yet.

Bush has been hospitalized since November after coming down with a bronchitis-like cough, though it was recently believed he'd be out by Christmas. A spokesperson for the 88-year-old tells the Associated Press that Bush has recovered from his fever but that he isn't being discharged yet because "sometimes issues crop up that are beyond anybody's ability to discern or foretell."

Doctors are "cautiously optimistic" that Bush will recover. Even though he was in a Houston hospital for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, the elder Bush has been visited by his family, including wife Barbara and sons Jeb and George W.
