Facebook organ donor option inspired by Steve Jobs says Mark Zuckerberg

facebook-organ-donor.jpgFor many of us, becoming an organ donor is a matter of checking a box when filling out your driver's license forms, and then we never think about it again. A new change to Facebook's timeline function, however, has highlighted this moment as a life milestone in an effort to encourage more people to become organ donors to help those in need of medical help.

"Many of those people -- an average of 18 people per day -- will die waiting, because there simply aren't enough organ donors to meet the need," a Facebook blog post explains. "Medical experts believe that broader awareness about organ donation could go a long way toward solving this crisis."

Mark Zuckerberg says he was motivated to make the change because of his friendship with Apple's Steve Jobs, who received a liver transplant that extended his life significantly. If you are an organ donor, you can publicize that on your Timeline. Click on "Life Event" and then "Health & Wellness" to select the option. If you're not a donor, Facebook can also help you find the correct registry to become one.
