Finalewatch '07: 'Supernatural: Part II'

Jensenackles2_thecw_s2_supernatural Well, hmmm. When you have a show called Supernatural that deals with demons and spellcasting and the like, there's always going to be a loophole or twist.

Oh, and hello? This is the season finale we're talking here, so blah, blah, blah spoilers. You've been warned.

When last we left the Winchester boys, only one was alive, Dean. Sammy had taken a shiv to the back thanks to Jake, a soldier who won Ol' Yellow Eyes' ghost town Battle Royale.

But really, we knew the boys couldn't be parted, so Dean unwisely made a deal with that sultry wish-granting demon from many episodes past. In exchange for Sammy's life, Dean would give up his soul in a year's time. That demon was a mean haggler.

I think that because Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are pretty, sometimes they don't get the recognition they deserve. And though they're no Meryl Streep, they do deliver some fine performances that balance the serious, sentimental, smart-alecky and silly. As Dean, Ackles had some fairly melodramatic stuff to choke out like, " I guess that's what I do, let down the people I love," but he somehow manages it without doing the overdone, soap opera emotive thing.

Somehow, the Winchesters teaming up with Bobby and Ellen lacked the oomph I would have wanted for a finale, but hey, there were some good payoffs, not the least being that Yellow Eyes finally got killed (I was so tired of his glib tongue) and that Papa Winchester got a cameo back from Hell.

Jaredpadalecki_thecw_s2_supernatura A few other highlights:
- Jake's lame attempt at rebellion: "Screw you and your freaky orders."
- Sam's chilling face as he empties several rounds into Jake.
- Jeffrey Dean Morgan back to do that wry, sentimental smiling thing.
- Dean telling Yellow Eyes' corpse: "That was for our mom, you son of a bitch."

Overall, it was just an okay finale. Yes, it sucks that a demon army was unleashed into the world and that technically Dean only has a year left, but it didn't feel very urgent. Maybe next season.

What did you think of the finale? How will Sam get Dean out of his soul-selling pickle?
