"The Flash," a highly anticipated pilot and spinoff of "Arrow" on The CW, has cast Candice Patton as its female lead, Iris West.

Per  The Hollywood Reporter, Patton's Iris is the best friend of main character Barry Allen ( Grant Gustin), otherwise known as The Flash. Having grown up together, Iris and Barry are expected to eventually become love interests.

Iris is also the daughter of Detective West ( Jesse L. Martin), a cop who serves as Barry's father figure. Other characters cast in the pilot include Detective Eddie Thawn ( Rick Cosnett), a recently transferred policeman with a dark past, and Caitlin Snow ( Danielle Panabaker), an intelligent bioengineer who lost her fiance in the explosion that gave Barry his super-fast powers.

The character of Barry Allen was introduced in two episodes of "Arrow" in December 2013. Based on the good reception of those installments, The CW canceled plans to air "Flash" as a back-door pilot. The show will instead get a stand-alone pilot that would air in the fall.

Patton is best known for her role of Tori in "The Game," but has also appeared on "Rizzoli & Isles," "CSI: Miami," "Grey's Anatomy," "One Tree Hill," "Entourage" and "The Young and the Restless."

Also cast in the "Flash" pilot is Carlos Valdes as Cisco Ramon. According to TVLine, Cisco is an engineering genius who works at Star Labs. He may be the same character that will eventually become Vibe in the DC Comics world. Valdes has been acting in the Broadway musical, " Once."
