On Friday (Sept. 13), FOX announced that they'd given a pilot order to "The Middle Man," a crime drama from Affleck and Glenn Gordon Caron ( "Medium"). The "Argo" director is attached to executive produce and direct the pilot, while Caron will take on writing duties. Production is scheduled to begin in early 2014.

Set in 1960s Boston, "The Middle Man" explores the unique relationship between Rudy MacAteer, an FBI agent charged with taking down the Italian-American mafia, and his confidential informant, Irish-American gangster Mickey Flood. As Rudy finds himself forced to bend the laws he pledged to enforce, the duo's actions inadvertently give rise to the Irish-American mob in, what the network calls, this timeless Boston crime saga.

Affleck hasn't been involved with the small screen since the early 2000s, when he produced the HBO (and later Bravo) documentary series "Project Greenlight" and the failed ABC mystery-hybrid series "Push, Nevada."
