FOX orders more 'Mindy Project,' Season 1 expands to 24 episodes

seth-meyers-mindy-kaling-mindy-project-fox.jpgGet ready for even more Mindy. FOX has ordered an additional two episodes of "The Mindy Project" on top of the "back nine" order the network already gave the show earlier this month.

That brings the total number of episodes for "Mindy's" first season to 24. (Though any similarity to FOX's former Kiefer Sutherland action hit is purely coincidental.)

Consider it a big sign of faith in how "Mindy" is shaping up, despite having only aired three episodes so far. It's especially notable because FOX has only ordered 19 episodes of their other freshman comedy, "Ben & Kate."

The erratic scheduling of "Mindy" so far this season has caused some media observers to wonder how the series can build an audience in these early stages. "Mindy" was preempted on Tuesday due to the second Presidential debate and won't air again this coming Tuesday because of a "X Factor" scheduling snafu. A Halloween episode will air on Oct. 30, and then "Mindy" will be off again on election night, Nov. 6. But the extra episodes should allow FOX to run fresh installments relatively uninterrupted come 2013.

"Mindy" stars and was created by Mindy Kaling and also stars Chris Messina, Ed Weeks, Anna Camp, Zoe Jarman, Amanda Setton, Stephen Tobolowsky and Ike Barinholtz.
