'Frankenstorm': Portable generators sell out, may exceed 'Perfect Storm'

frankenstorm-huriicane-sardy-noaa.jpgPortable generators are the hottest commodity in many states, as the northeast braces for "Frankenstorm." With the potential to create more of a nightmare than 1991's "Perfect Storm," this coming system may blast New England for several days.

Perry Hall Patch in Maryland reports generators are sold out at local warehouse stores, and WNEP in Scranton-Wilkes Barre, Pa. says phones are ringing off the hook at a local equipment rental shop.

Hurricane Sandy, which has already caused deaths in the Caribbean, is hundreds of miles off the coast of Florida, and making its way north. Meteorologist Kathy Orr tells CNN, "There is potential for widespread power outages, not just for a couple of days but for a couple of weeks or more, if the storm stays on track."

News outlets and social media have been buzzing with expectation of a disastrous "Frankenstorm," and CNN notes that its rare for a storm to get a pop culture name before it even hits. Hurricane Sandy will have to collide with an eastbound cold front to produce the level of drama the name implies.
