'Game of Thrones' Iron Throne beer arrives in time for Season 3
Winter is coming on March 31, and with it a new Westeros-themed beer. Ommegang Brewery has crafted the Iron Throne Blonde Ale to tie into the upcoming "Game of Throne" premiere, and Zap2it got an early taste of the new brew.
This is more than just a TV show tie-in. The Blonde Ale -- named because a Lannister is currently on the Iron Throne in "Game of Thrones" -- is a delicious beverage, and one that does the Ommegang name proud. The Belgian blonde ale is brewed in Ommegang's New York-based brewery with lemon peel and the spice grains of paradise. It's sweet and not too hoppy, not too heavy and goes down smooth. Ommegang brews their beers the classic Belgian way, so this actually could be something Tyrion Lannister would sip on in King's Landing.
The Blonde Ale is the first of four Iron Throne beers Ommegang is going to introduce. It's available in 43 states, and retailers can be found here. The 750 ml bottle is running for a suggested retail price of $8.50. The beer will also be available on draft in select locations.
The Blonde Ale has been making the rounds at the various "Game of Thrones" premieres around the country. When Zap2it caught up with the cast in Los Angeles, they gave the beer their stamp of approval. After tasting it for ourselves, we understand why. If you're planning a "Game of Thrones" feast, this would be a great accompaniment for it.
