'Game of Thrones': Read the Red Wedding chapter from 'A Storm of Swords' online
It's only been two days since the horrific Red Wedding took place in the "Game of Thrones" episode "The Rains of Castamere," but it's been much longer since the event initially occurred. Author George R.R. Martin published the third novel in his "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series, "A Storm of Swords," way back in 2000, and the sting from that traumatizing event hasn't faded in the 13 years since.
It's understandable that not all fans of HBO's fantasy TV show are interested or invested enough to pick up Martin's five massive tomes and read the story of the Starks, Lannisters and Targaryens from his perspective. Still, the Red Wedding is the most infamous event in the entire "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series, and the one Martin admits he had the most trouble writing. Harper Collins UK posted the "A Storm of Swords" chapter that contains the Red Wedding online in a PDF format to allow curious fans to see how the famous sequence played out originally. The chapter, which is told from Catelyn Stark's perspective, can be found here. Note: Some characters and storylines in the chapter will differ from the ones seen on the TV show.
"It would have been very hard for me to write that episode again, but fortunately David and Dan wanted to write that episode, so I didn't fight them on it," he said. "That was a very tough thing to write it the first time."
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Martin says he knew from the get-go that he would eventually write the events of the Red Wedding.
"I knew it almost from the beginning. Not the first day, but very soon. I've said in many interviews that I like my fiction to be unpredictable. I like there to be considerable suspense," he says, adding of the Red Wedding, "It's probably the most powerful scene in the books."
"Game of Thrones'" Season 3 finale, "Mhysa," airs on HBO at 9 p.m. ET on June 9.
