'Game of Thrones' Season 3 featurette: Five new characters you should be excited to meet

Jon Snow may know nothing, but "Game of Thrones" fans have received an exciting taste of what's in store in the upcoming third season of the hit HBO fantasy series. A new featurette has been released, and it teases what co-showrunner David Benioff calls "the rise and fall season."

There's plenty of behind-the-scenes and finished footage in this teaser, but what's got us the most intrigued are all the new characters who are shown throughout the video. Some are given time in the spotlight, like Diana Rigg's Lady Olenna and Ciaran Hinds' Mance Rayder, while others are only seen for a brief moment. Here's a rundown of the new characters that are worth knowing from Season 3, and where you can find them in this teaser:

Lady Olenna
Better known as the Queen of Thorns, Lady Olenna is the grandmother of Margaery and Loras Tyrell. She can be seen in the featurette speaking with Tyrion Lannister and dining next to Margaery and King Joffrey, the latter scene snippet being a nice shout out to an event that will likely occur in Season 4. As Tyrion learns early on, Lady Olenna is not one to be trifled with and much more than meets the eye.

Mance Rayder
With an introduction to rival that of Yara Greyjoy, Mance Rayder is the King Beyond the Wall who is amassing Wildlings to drive them south into Westeros. Jon Snow finally gets to meet the Night's Watch deserter in the upcoming season and can be seen standing in the snow with Jon among his followers several times throughout the teaser. Mance is one of the most interesting introductions in Season 3, and it's incredibly exciting to see an actor like Hinds portraying him.

Thoros of Myr
Thoros of Myr is only one step away from a character we really can't wait to get to know: Beric Dondarrion. Thoros is a red priest of the Lord of Light like Melissandre, but with very different motivations. He can be spotted at 0:24 and 0:56, where he shoves around Arya Stark. He and Beric are a part of the Brotherhood Without Banners, a group that Arya gets unwittingly drawn into during the third season of "Game of Thrones."

Jojen and Meera Reed
Ah, the Reed siblings. Though they technically should have been introduced in Season 2, Jojen and Meera Reed will make their long-anticipated debut in the upcoming season. They become allies of Bran, Rickon, Osha and Hodor, and help Bran understand the vision of the three-eyed crow that he continues to see. The best shot of their band comes at around the 1:30 mark.

The Unsullied
Technically the Unsullied are more than one character, but for the sake of this list we'll just say that they're one unified force. Daenerys Targaryen comes across the slave-soldiers in Astapor and decides she wants them for herself. In the trailer, they can be seen as groups of highly trained warriors in the desert settings of "Game of Thrones." You'll have to wait until the third season premieres to find out more about the Unsullied and what their role is in the show, but for now let's just say that a dragon is not a slave (or just Google it).

"Game of Thrones" returns to HBO on March 31.
