'Game of Thrones' Season 4 gains Indira Varma as Ellaria Sand
Oberyn Martell now has his Ellaria Sand. The love interest of the Red Viper has been cast for "Game of Thrones" Season 4.
Entertainment Weekly reports that "Rome" alum Indira Varma has been cast as the paramour of Pedro Pascal's new character. Ellaria is the mother of Oberyn's four youngest bastard daughters and accompanies him to King's Landing in Season 4 when Oberyn takes the seat at King Joffrey's Small Council that was offered to his brother, Prince Doran.
Both Oberyn and Ellaria hail from the area of Westeros known as Dorne, which previously has not been seen in "Game of Thrones." The Dornish characters, particularly the Martell family, play major roles in the HBO fantasy series' upcoming seasons.
"We got more action, which is obviously more time consuming," showrunner David Benioff tells EW of Season 4. "It's a brutal shooting season ahead. But if we can make it through, yeah, I think it's going to surpass season three. The last three episodes, there's so many scenes we've been waiting for so long to do. And it just gets more and more fun to write for these characters. After three years of doing it, we have that much more comfort to make everything uncomfortable for them. We're very excited for it."
"Game of Thrones" returns to HBO with Season 4 in Spring 2014. Also new to the show is "Sherlock's" Mark Gatiss.
