Beginning with the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards Sunday, Jan. 16 (on NBC), get ready to hear the question that will be asked most over the next few months: "Who are you wearing?"
Decisions are made long before they become obvious on the red carpet. From the moment a celebrity knows she's going to be at an event, either she or her stylist is at work on the big question: what to wear.
Gia Mantegna, this year's Miss Golden Globes, reflects on how she will dress, even if she's not yet sure what she will wear to the show considered the gateway to the awards season.
"It will be something appropriate for the event," she says. "The Golden Globes are definitely more elegant and classy. I'll have my hair pulled back and clean makeup."
"My personal style is very edgy and not Golden Globes-friendly," she says. "I am always trying to not wear black. I wear black all the time, every day, and it's always a struggle to get me to wear color. I am definitely wearing something not black."
"It will be elegant, and obviously relevant to the fashion going on right now," she continues. "I am relying a lot on Taylor to guide me through the appropriate designers and appropriate dress. It's important I wear something not too flashy that will outshine anyone else and that mirrors my role in the ceremony."
Taylor is her stylist, Taylor Jacobson, who once Mantegna was picked, began figuring out three outfits - the red carpet, the three-hour live show and the after party.
"I am kind of feeling a little Audrey Hepburn, and with an edge," Jacobson says of what she's imagining for Mantegna. "Maybe a traditional princess-style dress, maybe accessorized edgy with sharp diamonds and graphic jewelry."
Mantegna would have her pick from samples not yet in stores, and Jacobson says she plans to check with some favorite designers, including Zac Posen, Monique Lhuillier, J. Mendel, Oscar de la Renta, and Dolce & Gabbana.
For shoes, Jacobson wants Mantegna to wear 6-inch "tranny heels," as she calls them, by Casadei. "They will be secure, superhigh shoes," she says, meaning Mantegna won't fall off them.
Mantegna says she wears heels all the time, so she wasn't worried about being uncomfortable. Jacobson stresses that comfort is critical to pulling off an outfit.
She was likely to accessorize with an evening bag from Judith Leiber, Jimmy Choo, Tod's or Ferragamo.
For those who don't have stylists and designers sending over samples, Jacobson recommends checking out Forever 21, H&M and Zara.
"They all do cute cocktail dresses, not so much gowns," Jacobson says. "You can get a fun, little cocktail dress and layer up some rhinestone necklaces and a big cocktail ring."
