Greenpeace puts Barbie on notice; protests Mattel's use of Indonesian trees in packaging

greenpeace-mattel.jpgOn Tuesday, 10 protesters were arrested near the El Segundo, Calif., offices of Mattel Inc. after they unfurled a massive banner from the toy maker's 15-story headquarters. The banner featured an image of Ken (Barbie's longtime boyfriend) and the words, "Barbie: it's over. I don't date girls that are into deforestation."

According to the Los Angeles Times, Greenpeace is protesting Mattel's use of packaging purportedly made from wood taken from Indonesian rainforests.

"Barbie's dirty secret is that her packaging is made from the rain forests of Indonesia," Rolf Skar, senior forest campaigner for Greenpeace USA, tells the LA Times. "Mattel has shown no due diligence. It buys paper without asking where it's coming from."

As of this writing, Barbie had no comment.
