Groundhog Day: Punxsutawney Phil's ready for his big moment

punxsutawney-phil.jpgEvery Feb. 2, unassuming groundhog Punxsutawney Phil is snatched from his comfy burrow and asked to tell us whether or not Americans will experience six more weeks of wintry weather.

But, according to Stormfax.com, Phil has only been correct 39 percent of the time since he's been alternately seeing or not seeing his shadow for the past 120-plus years. Which, to be fair, is probably about as accurate as most local TV weathermen.

And how can one little rodent in Pennsylvania predict weather patterns for the entire country, anyway? EarthSky.org suggests that if we are going to rely on rodent meteorology, we appoint regional groundhogs specific to the country's diverse weather zones.

Whatever the case, Punxsutawney, Pa. is ready for it's close-up -- even if Phil could care less. To watch the dawn ceremony live on the web, visit groundhog.org.
