Halle Berry's 'Extant' will premiere on CBS in July

halle-berry-oscars-325-gi.jpgCBS will double down on its summer drama offerings this year when "Extant," starring Halle Berry, joins "Under the Dome" on the air.

The network says "Extant" will debut Wednesday, July 2, two days after Season 2 of "Under the Dome" debuts. CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler says the series, produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, "is the perfect melding of classic Spielberg genres -- it's science fiction and it's family."

The show stars Berry as an astronaut who returns from a year-long mission in space -- and she's pregnant. She struggles to reconnect with her inventor husband and their son, who's an android the husband built.

"What happened to Molly in space ultimately could be a threat to her son," and possibly to humanity, creator Mickey Fisher says in a teaser clip CBS showed to critics Wednesday (Jan. 15) at the TCA winter press tour.

Fisher also executive produces "Extant" with Spielberg, Greg Walker ("Without a Trace," "Vegas"), Brooklyn Weaver, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank.
