'How I Met Your Mother' Season 9, episode 15 - 'Unpause': Something good (and bad) happens after 2 a.m.

how-i-met-your-mother-unpause.jpgSince the title of Monday's (Jan. 20) episode of "How I Met Your Mother" is "Unpause," let's employ Marshall and Lily's fight-stalling tactic in discussing it. Much of it was a lot of fun, but I have one major beef with it. So ...

Pause.

Creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas said last week that we would learn the name of Ted's kids in this episode, but it still came as a pleasant surprise to see the episode open with Ted and his very pregnant wife about to welcome their second child. The show continues to be spot-on with its depiction of the Mother, which is helping

Ted makes note of his own mom's rule that "nothing good happens after 2 a.m." and says the baby better hurry up. He doesn't, though, and when we return to Ted and the Mother at episode's end, Future Ted notes every rule has its exception -- aww. And those kids' names? Penny (because Ted collects pennies) and Luke (Ted's a huge "Star Wars" fan). Nicely done, "HIMYM."

And the B-story with Barney getting truth-serum drunk*, and subsequently answering all manner of questions about his life, was great in both its quick jokes ("Yes, but not while she was secretary of state") and the longer bit about what he does for a living, and his elaborate revenge plot on the dude who stole his girlfriend way back when, including the return of Barney's theme song.

(*For anyone with a kid under about 12, there was also a great joke when Barney slips back into Jabba-speak after the first ring-bear(er) question. "Aggle flabble klabble, wumby flappy, snurp" is from the children's book "Knuffle Bunny.")

Finally, Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel were great as Lily and Marshall finally had their fight over him taking the judgeship without telling her. The two of them have often carried "HIMYM's" emotional weight, and they were once again on their A-game here.

Now then: Unpause.

Simply put, Marshall fought dirty, and it left something of a sour taste in my mouth. Insomuch as it speaks to some insecurity he's had over the stability of his and Lily's marriage, it's a revealing moment. But it's also completely unfair.

Marshall ceded any high ground he had by not telling Lily about the judgeship, and pulling out "you dumped me and left" -- and then laying a what-if scenario on top of that -- goes way out of bounds. (Calling Lily's Italy dream a "hobby" isn't much better.) Lily wasn't ready to offer any compromise, but frankly, she shouldn't have to at this point. We know the Eriksens stay together, but that was tough to watch.

As for who Lily called when she left, the guess here is Ranjit, based on her getting in the back seat. The Mother was last seen driving the van she stole from her bandmate, and toko the train to Farhampton, so unless she upgraded her ride in a major way in the past couple of hours, it's likely not her.
