Chris Brown, Rihanna, Usher, George Carlin: Who missed out on the Grammys?

Chrisbrown_teenchoiceawards08_240 If you missed out on the Grammys Sunday night, you weren't the only one.

Chris Brown and Rihanna

The stylish duo were conspicuously absent from the night's celebration of music. Initial reports had said Rihanna had pulled out because she was involved a car accident the night before but was "well."

Later, however, we learned that Chris Brown had surrendered himself to the Los Angeles police Sunday regarding a felony battery investigation for making criminal threats against a woman. Many reports have said that the woman in question was Rihanna. There has been no official statement from Brown's rep.

In equally dramatic fashion, on Saturday, Usher Raymond IV canceled his pre-Grammy Gala performance to jet to Brazil to be with his wife Tameka Foster Raymond who reportedly suffered from complications from plastic surgery.

The couple, married since August 2007, have two sons together, with young Naveid Ely born just in December.

The Dish Rag's Elizabeth Snead surmises that the plastic surgery may have been a post-natal tummy tuck.

The late, great comedian George Carlin -- who passed away in June -- was honored with the posthumous award of best comedy album Sunday.

His daughter Kelly was on hand to accept the award, saying, "I was hoping to get through this without crying ... I promise to take care of this better than my dad did."

She revealed that her father, in true Carlin fashion, had dismantled his first Grammy while in a chemically altered state.

"This was back in 1972 when a lot of chemicals were being used by human beings," Kelly Carlin told reporters. "He took it apart. And someone from the academy found out so they sent him a new one."

This Grammy-winning saxophonist was curiously missing from the Grammy's memorial tribute.

Moore was  a founding member of Dave Matthews Band and passed away in August 2008 of complications from his injuries in the ATV accident.

Pop music and jazz figures we lost in 2008.

 M.I.A.

Okay, despite her naMia_240me and her incredibly pregnant belly, singer M.I.A. didn't miss out on the Grammys and even performed two songs -- "Paper Planes" and "Swagga Like Us."

Wearing a sheer black number with polka-dotted bits strategically placed over her breasts and belly, the singer sang and danced on stage with T.I., Lil Wayne, Jay Z and Kanye West.

It was a close call though. M.I.A. was supposedly due to pop out her little swagga-er Sunday. Following her performance, the Recording Academy bypassed M.I.A. -- who was nominated for Record of the Year -- for Robert Plant and Alison Krauss.
