Isaac Mizrahi talks 'Project Runway All Stars' finale, plus: sneak peek at Mondo, Michael and Austin finale looks
"I think my most favorite moment was the ultimate moment when somebody won," the designer tells Zap2it on a conference call with reporters. "I won't tell you who it was, but it was the best moment because week after week, the worst moment was sending somebody home."
Rejecting one contestant each week was hard for the judges, Mizrahi says.
"I'll tell you what, honestly, I think every one of us is very candid about our criticisms, and we gave it to them as straight as possible. I would say that no matter what, it's difficult to tell someone they have to go home. No matter how nicely you put that, it's a difficult task. Somehow, what made up for that week after week was watching someone's face as they won. It was really just so wonderful to see how motivating and inspiring that was for the designers."
Mizrahi is excited about the three designers left in the competition -- Austin Scarlett, Mondo Guerra and Michael Costello. If he had to sum up each of their styles, he'd put it this way: "I would describe Austin as sort of flamboyant and feminine. Mondo is inventive and soulful. Mondo has a lot of soul, I think. Michael is sexy and kind of -- let's see -- luxurious."
Of the three finalists, Mizrahi says he thinks Michael has come the furthest since his original appearance in terms of his design skill.
"From my perspective, I think it's Michael," Mizrahi admits. "I think he's grown the most since his first season. I remember thinking, 'Wow, he really needs to come a long way,' and then by the end of that particular season I thought he did great. He really learned a lot, and by the time he came to 'All Stars,' he really was ready."
