James Franco drops out of directing, starring in 'Garden of Last Days' with Emilia Clarke

james-franco-trashes-neighborhood-gi.jpgJames Franco has dropped out as director and star of the indie drama "Garden of Last Days" just two weeks before production was scheduled to begin, citing "creative differences."

Deadline reports Franco departed the project over disagreement with financier Millennium Films. The dispute reportedly involves Franco's choices for certain crew positions.

"Last Days" is an adaptation of a novel by Andre Dubus III ("House of Sand and Fog") that follows three interwoven stories exploring the "seamy underside of American life." "Game of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke was set to play the lead role of a stripper with a 3-year-old daughter.

Franco's exit recalls the dramatic departure of director Lynne Ramsay from the Natalie Portman Western "Jane Got a Gun" earlier this year. Ramsay was ultimately replaced by Gavin O'Connor ("Warrior") and the project stuck together (give or take a few key cast members).

Deadline reports "Garden of Last Days" is not likely to be so lucky and production plans are expected to be shut down entirely.
