Jamie Lynn Spears on teen pregnancy: 'I just want to be a soccer mom'

jamie-lynn-spears-21.jpgWhen Jamie Lynn Spears went public with news of her pregnancy at just 16 years old, she left her Nickelodeon show "Zoey 101" behind and moved to a small town to raise her daughter, Maddie. Now, at 21, Spears is ready to reenter the public eye -- she's moved to Nashville and is working on an album as a singer-songwriter.

In a new interview with Glamour, Spears opens up about what happened in 2007 when she and boyfriend Casey Aldridge got pregnant. She admits they weren't using birth control methods.

"I was young. I was in love. I was like every other teenager, except I had this last name. And I made a decision that is forever my decision," she says. "I believe in safety and birth control as prevention. But like many young girls...I was really scared to go to the doctor. And I was on a Nickelodeon show, and it [felt] especially embarrassing to ask someone to put me on birth control. I didn't want to ask my doctor, because she had a little girl."

She was criticized for announcing her pregnancy in a magazine article. "I needed to give an explanation to my fans, and I wanted it to be in my words first. I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls and the mothers who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy," she says.

After some on-again-off-again, Spears and Aldridge have split up and Maddie spends one weekend a month with her father while Spears works on her music. Though Spears says she goes on the occasional date, none of her relationships have gotten serious because she's hesitant to introduce her daughter to a man. She does, however, hope to be settled down with someone eventually.

"I'm not going to say, 'Come to the house, and let's watch a movie,' because I have Maddie there. The one thing that does get me excited is one day having that relationship," she admits. "I look forward to that--I really do. I just want to be a soccer mom. I want to cook dinner every night. I want the kids to come home and be dirty and make the house messy. At the same time, I have to be patient and wait for the right time and the right guy. I would have never known that until I went through what I went through. I'm just patiently waiting for Prince Charming."
