The wife of the late Jim Henson died Tuesday, after battling cancer. Jane Henson was 78 years old. Her death was confirmed in a statement from The Jim Henson Company

Jane met Jim in a puppetry class at the Univesity of Maryland in the early 1950s before the two married in 1959. Jane worked with Jim creating the Muppets cast of characters, first teaming with him to create "Sam and Friends," a puppet TV show that aired locally in Washington, D.C.

Together, Jim and Jane had five children between 1960 and 1970. Though they separated in 1986, they remained close until Henson's death in 1990. Jane served on the boards for the Jim Henson Foundation, as well as the American Center for Children's television. She died at the Henson family home in Connecticut. A memorial is planned for next week.
