Javier Bardem once offered the role of James Bond?

Judging by the reviews that have come out for "Skyfall," Javier Bardem kills it (pun intended) as the newest Bond villain. But it turns out that he almost was a part of the 007 franchise years ago.

CinemaBlend interviewed Bardem for "Skyfall" and asked if he'd ever been asked to don a tuxedo, hop in an Aston Martin and play James Bond himself. Bardem confirmed that he had in fact been offered the role "years ago."

"I don't remember what movie it was for. But yeah, it just was not that time. I didn't feel that it was the time for me to do something like that," he tells the outlet. "And also, I was doing something else, so I passed. This time, when I read it, I felt that it was very powerful material, and I wanted to join [a Bond movie]."

Entertainment Weekly reports that Bardem might have misunderstood the question, because a source tells them he was offered a role in a Bond movie, but not the part of James Bond. Regardless, Bardem told CinemaBlend that he doesn't regret waiting until now to delve into the 007 world.

"I have passed on many things that I could easily regret, but I don't regret any of them, because that also gives room for something else to come that I'm proud of," he said. "Even if those things were not beautifully executed, those were the things that I believed in at the time."

"Skyfall" opens on Nov. 9.
