"Avengers" director Joss Whedon is cool with Ben Affleck playing Batman in the upcoming "Man of Steel" sequel. The geek icon tweeted on Friday (Aug. 23) that Affleck would "crush it."

Considering his standing in the world of comic book-based movies, it's likely that many were asking Whedon about the casting of Affleck in the role. The writer and director behind "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly" and more could not have been clearer in his response:

"Affleck'll crush it. He's got the chops, he's got the chin -- just needs the material. Affleck & Cavill toe to toe -- I'm in."

This has turned into a very controversial issue. As soon as Warner Bros. announced the Batman casting on Thursday (Aug. 22), the Internet went wild. Many took issue with Ben Affleck in a role previously played by Christian Bale, George Clooney, Val Kilmer, Michael Keaton and Adam West. Others supported the choice of the actor and director responsible for such films as " Argo" and " The Town."

Ben Affleck as Batman: The Internet needs to relax.

Joss Whedon is obviously in the latter group. Only time will tell if he's right.
