Kellie Pickler shaves her head in support of friend with cancer
The country-music star and former "American Idol" contestant has shaved her head in support of her best friend Summer Holt Miller, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in June and starts chemotherapy on Thursday (Sept. 6).
Video of Pickler and Miller getting their hair buzzed aired on "Good Morning America" Wednesday, with the hope that it will urge women to get mammograms.
"Cancer does not discriminate," Pickler says in a release from Athena Water, which is donating money to the American Cancer Society in Miller's name. Adds Miller, "If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it."
Miller, who has a family history of breast cancer, was diagnosed in June after having a mammogram. She underwent a double mastectomy, and doctors pronounced her cancer-free last month. The chemotherapy is to ward off a recurrence.
