Kirk Cameron calls gay marriage 'destructive' to 'the foundations of civilization'; GLAAD responds

kirk-cameron-glaad.jpgAnyone who has followed Kirk Cameron's career since his "Growing Pains" days won't be too surprised by his latest statements. The former teen idol appeared on "Piers Morgan Tonight" Friday (Mar. 2) and came out against gay marriage, calling it "unnatural," "detrimental" and "ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization."

Response from GLAAD was swift.

"In this interview, Kirk Cameron sounds even more dated than his 1980s TV character," says Herndon Graddick, GLAAD's senior director of programs. "Cameron is out of step with a growing majority of Americans, particularly people of faith who believe that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character and not condemned because of their sexual orientation."

A born again Christian, Cameron works to train others in evangelism and is also a proponent of Intelligent Design.

"Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve. One man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don't think anyone else should either," Cameron told Morgan.

"With an increasing number of states recognizing marriage equality, Americans are seeing that marriage is about committed couples who want to make a lifelong promise to take care of and be responsible for each other and that gay and lesbian couples need equal security and legal protections. That's not 'redefining' anything," counters Graddick.

An online petition has been started to let people share with Cameron that is no longer their idol and a handy graphic has been provided for Facebook posting.

GLAAD has also compiled a list of today's teen idols that support gay marriage, including Aziz Ansari, Chris Colfer, Miley Cyrus, Hilary Duff, Dakota Fanning, Zac Efron, Josh Hutcherson and Kristen Stewart.

Yes, Aziz Ansari being called a "teen idol" makes us giggle too.
