Kristen Stewart lands lead in 'Lie Down in Darkness'

kristen-stewart-cannes-2012-1.jpgTabloid fave Kristen Stewart has landed the lead role in "Lie Down in Darkness," an indie adaptation of William Styron's 1951 novel and a part that was apparently hotly sought by "Hunger Games" star Jennifer Lawrence.

Stewart will play Peyton Loftis, a '1950's-era Southern beauty constantly compared to a crippled sister, loathed by her mother and targeted by her father's incestuous advances. Scott Cooper ( "Crazy Heart") will direct, reports Vulture.

Lawrence had been in contention for the role, but she'll be tied up for most of 2013 shooting sequels for both "The Hunger Games" and "X Men." As for Stewart's sequel prospects, the assumed "Snow White and the Huntsman" sequel is on hold while fallout from the alleged affair between Stewart and "Snow White" director Rupert Sanders plays out.
