'Last Resort': Scott Speedman and Andre Braugher go nuclear in ABC's new drama

scott-speedman-last-resort.jpg"Last Resort" doesn't exactly seem on-brand for ABC, but the trailer for the new series sure has us intrigued.

Andre Braugher ("Men of a Certain Age") stars as the captain of a nuclear submarine who receives possibly sketchy orders to launch a strike on Pakistan. When he refuses and another U.S. warship fires on the sub, he and his executive officer ( Scott Speedman, "Felicity" and "Underworld") decide to go rogue and set up camp on a sparsely populated tropical island, which suddenly becomes the world's newest nuclear-armed nation.

The trailer is tense and features some good action, but ABC Entertainment president Paul Lee also touted its "big-tent" qualities to reporters on Tuesday (May 15), saying it tested well with women and men. As for us, we're curious to see how much of a gray area Braugher's character lives in. He comes off as very principled at the beginning of the teaser, but that seems to shift by the end.

"Last Resort," which was created by Shawn Ryan ("The Shield," "The Chicago Code") and Karl Gajdusek ("Dead Like Me"), also stars Daisy Betts ("Persons Unknown"), Dichen Lachman ("Dollhouse") and Autumn Reeser ("No Ordinary Family," "The O.C."). Robert Patrick (Ryan's "The Unit") will have a recurring part, and Bruce Davison ("X-Men," "Knight Rider") also appears in the pilot. It's scheduled for 8 p.m. ET Thursdays on ABC in the fall.
