Madonna confirmed as Super Bowl halftime act

madonna-toronto-getty.jpgNBC has finally confirmed Sunday (Dec. 4) what has been rumored for months. Madonna is confirmed as the halftime act for Super Bowl XLVI.

The network, which is airing the big game, announced the news during halftime of its "Sunday Night Football" broadcast. SBNation.com had reported this was likely to be the case in early Oct.

The hiring of the 53-year-old "Material Girl" for the gig continues the NFL's recent trend of picking music legends to entertain the fans between halves. This came in the wake of the notorious Janet Jackson/Justin Timerberlake "wardrobe malfunction" of 2004. Some recent halftime acts include The Who, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen.

Super Bowl XLVI will take place on Feb. 5, 2012 in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
