Mary Richardson Kennedy was found dead on Wednesday (May 16) at a Kennedy family property in Bedford, N.Y., reports the Associated Press.

Kennedy was 52 and had struggled with drug and alcohol problems and legal troubles in recent years, despite being called a "devoted wife and mother" by family members. She was also considered a pioneer of "green" architecture.

"It is with deep sadness that the family of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. mourns the loss of Mary Richardson Kennedy, wife and mother of their four beloved children. Mary inspired our family with her kindness, her love, her gentle soul and generous spirit," reads a statement from her husband's family.

Mary and RFK Jr. were married for 16 years before he filed for divorce two years ago. They had four children and were still married at the time of her death on Wednesday.
