Media outlets identify the wrong shooter in Newtown, CT school massacre: Innocent Ryan Lanza's photo posted on news sites

fox-news-confirms-ryan-adam-lanza.jpgIt appears that numerous television and online news outlets have identified the wrong man as the shooter in the Newtown, CT Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that took place Friday morning.

Though FOX News, ABC News, Piers Morgan, Pete Williams, and other outlets initially named 24-year-old Ryan Lanza as the shooter, the Associated Press is now confirming that the actual shooter, who is deceased inside the school, is 20-year-old Adam Lanza. Some sources claim that Adam was carrying his brother's ID at the time of his death.

A Facebook photo uploaded by a Ryan Lanza from Newtown, CT, with his current home listed as Hoboken, NJ, had over 14,000 shares and comments after Slate and other outlets posted links to the profile. Angry commenters called him a "monster," a "sociopath," and worse.

Meanwhile, Ryan posted frantic status updates to his profile. "IT WASN'T ME I WAS AT WORK IT WASN'T ME," he posted, then two minutes later, "I'm on the bus home now it wasn't me." The posts were uploaded after the shooter was already confirmed dead by law enforcement officials at the school.

The Facebook photo of Ryan, not Adam, was uploaded to Gawker, Buzzfeed, and more, with headlines naming him as the suspected shooter. We've blurred the photo here.
