Mel Gibson responds to Joe Eszterhas: 'Significant waste of time'

mel-gibson-joe-eszterhas-feud-fight.jpgScreenwriter Joe Eszterhas painted a vivid picture of an unhinged Mel Gibson earlier Wednesday (Apr. 11). In a 9-page letter to Gibson published by The Wrap, Eszterhas charges the actor with being a Holocaust denier who talked of wanting to hire two former FBI agents to kill his ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva.

Furthermore, the screenwriter claims that Gibson never had any intention of making "The Maccabees," a movie about Jewish warrior hero Judah Maccabee -- that Eszterhas collaborated and wrote a script for -- but had only attached himself to the project to do reputation damage control.

Not so fast, says Gibson. In a letter obtained by TMZ, Gibson responds, calling Eszterhas' claims "utter fabrications" and accusing him of lashing out because Gibson and Warner Bros. rejected his inadequate script.

"In 25 years of script development I have never seen a more substandard first draft or a more significant waste of time," Gibson writes.

Showing remarkable restraint, Gibson manages to refrain from taking the missive -- and argument -- to a personal level, concluding, "I think that we can agree that this should be our last communication."

Directly, yes. But it's doubtful that others will let it go so easily.
